    Good…but could be a lot better, November 2, 2004

The motor/shredder unit (the heaviest part of the machine) is tongue mounted and moves considerably side-to-side as the terrain changes, causing the discharge elbow to get out of alignment with the opening in the leaf cart. This causes the connecting boot to wear out almost immediately. In addition, the tilt/dump feature is worthless since debris still has to be raked out. This could be a great machine if the manufacturer would simply beef up the framing, tie the motor and cart to that framing, and eliminate the dumping feature. The philosophy is great, but the design is lacking…be prepared to re-build it yourself if satisfaction is the goal.

Good idea poorly implemented, November 8, 2009

I had the Agri-Fab chip-n-vac (mow-n-vac plus a shredder theoretically capable of limbs up to 2″ diameter). My mother has over 300 deciduous trees AND a dislike for ANY leaves lying on the ground (bad combination). So I installed this unit on her rider mower. The trailer itself seemed fairly well built. Emptying it was no real problem. It had a good capacity, any more and her 18HP hydrostatic mower would not be able to pull it.HOWEVER, the problem is this: even though anything going through the hose has already passed through a running lawnmower deck, the hose is narrow enough that tiny little twigs (6-8″ long and < 0.1″ diameter) can just bridge the inside of the hose from one side to the other where it connects to the motor/fan housing. This is compounded by the fact that the hose is larger diameter than the fan intake, causing a little ledge for the twigs to catch on. Once this happens, you are finished. The leaves will very quickly back up behind the twig and clog the hose. Then you have to shut down the whole system and spend 15 minutes unplugging it. And bear in mind this is a unit with a chipper which is supposedly capable of eating most of a wooden baseball bat, brought to its knees by the wood equivalent of a Q-Tip.The vac would clog approximately every 10 minutes, probably 6 times per load. This turned a 2-hour job into an 8-hour job, not what I had in mind when I bought a labor-saving device.I complained to Agri-Fab, pointing out this flaw. Rather than admit their error, they said that I should pick up all the twigs before vacuuming leaves…? Not sure how that would be feasible since twigs are much denser than leaves and therefore work their way underneath the leaves? Not to mention pretty much every leaf is connected to a twig at some point in its life. This means I would have to pick up all my leaves, separate them from the twigs somehow, then take away the twigs, and put the leaves back down for the Agri Fab to pick up? I didnt even finish the job, rather I returned the unit the next day and got my money back.My recommendation is, if you want a powered leaf vac; instead of this, get a “Cyclone Rake”. It is not my favorite design, because it has a semi-rigid attachment to the tractor with free-castering wheels rather than an actual trailer. This means you have to be careful to not swat trees and fences when you turn, kind of like a bushhog on a 3-pt hitch. However, it more than makes up for it in the fact that a) the hose is ~50% larger diameter so it moves more leaves, b) has no entry-point narrows at the fan and c) since it is rigidly attached the hose does not have to flex in turns and can be much shorter. The materials are very sturdy and in two partial seasons (probably 25 full loads of leaves) I have not had 1 single jam in the system, even when wet! And it picks up amazingly well, almost 100%. Furthermore with its canvas sides it collapses to a very small footprint for storage, so if space is at a premium for you, it can be hung from a wall. The pieces are all solid and seem very well designed for long-term maintenance. In my only contact with customer service so far I had a buckle break and they sent a replacement piece at no charge with no hassle. it even comes with a little pouch of tools to assemble it with and very detailed instruction notebook for installation, maintenance and winterizing. Cyclone Rake ftw!

    mow – vac, October 11, 2005

I have had really great success with the mow – n – vac. BUT, like others, I find fault with the tongue and it’s tendency to tilt due to the weight. Also the boot around the discharge to the cart wore out in less than 2 years! The molded plastic housing coming up from the impeller wore through in the 1st year! The inboard top corner on the deck attaching box has wore through from the insde, indicating it is not thick enough. There should be a swivel on the discharge tube, incorporated with a self unloader p/u.
